Safety
Culture
Safety culture has been described as “the way
we do things around here”. It’s a difficult concept to grasp
exactly as it is easily confused with behaviours (which is what individuals
actually do), attitude (which is the individual and collective psychological
feeling towards compliance with safety procedures), and safety climate –
which is a snapshot of the culture.
Culture, behaviour and attitude, are all
inter-related and changes in one influences the others. There are a number of
tools available to measure safety culture, which one to use will depend on the
attitude and current culture so its difficult without experience to decide
which system to use. We can provide independent impartial advice on measurement
and improvement tools having used them in a variety of circumstances, and
provide administrative resource to deliver the safety culture survey, including
identifying the most effective groupings of staff to obtain data from, assistance
in interpretation of the results, and suggest methods of improving culture.
Our experience includes HSE, RSSB and Keil Centre (Safety Culture Maturity Model) Survey tools,
use of both Du Pont behavioural change methods, and bespoke
behavioural methods. We can also help clients to produce their own behavioural
change programme using the most appropriate tools for their circumstances and parts
of their organisation.
